James Emery White is the founding and senior pastor of Mecklenburg Community Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, a seeker-friendly congregation; president of Serious Times, a ministry which explores the intersection of faith and culture; and professor of theology and culture on the Charlotte campus of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, which he also served as its fourth president. He's the author of The Da Vinci Question.
What He Said…Birth Right or Wrong?
At the ripe old age of nine, it dawned on me that I was a Christian because my parents were Christians, or at least held a Christian worldview and disposition.
Like a thunderbolt from the blue, it hit me: That's why I believe it all; I had been raised to believe it! And that, of course, didn't make it true; my pre-adolescent brain quickly surmised that if I'd been born in India, I would have been raised to believe and accept Hinduism. If I'd been born in Iran, my parents would have raised me to accept the Muslim faith.
I remember panicking: What if I wasn't born in the right country? My eternal destiny suddenly seemed to rest on whether my family of origin was geographically correct.
I went to my mother, innocently working in the kitchen and unaware of my spiritual crisis. "Mom," I blurted out, "why are we Christians? You did, like, check it out first, didn't you? How do you know we're believing the right religion?" [continued 5/26]
