The nuclear submarine Thresher had heavy steel armor and bulkheads to withstand the pressure of diving deep. Unfortunately, on a 1963 test run, the nuclear engine quit, and it couldn't resurface. As it sank deeper and deeper, the immense pressure buckled the bulkheads, crushing the Thresher with its crew of 129.
The Navy searched for the Thresher with a much stronger research craft, shaped like a steel ball, which it lowered on a cable. They located the Thresher, crushed like an eggshell, at a depth of 8,400 feet (one-and-a-half miles), where the pressure is a staggering 3,600 pounds per square inch! The searchers were surprised to see fish at that depth. They had no inches of steel to protect them, but appeared to have normal skin. How could they survive under all that pressure? Why weren't they crushed by the weight of the water? Their secret: They have the same pressure inside themselves as outside.
