Two Measures of Sacrifice: Independence Day Bonus Page
Theme of the Week: Life Is Too Short
Friday, July 4, 2008

Bible Verse: The Lord Jesus Christ … died for our sins, just as God our Father planned, in order to rescue us from this evil world in which we live (Galatians 1:3-4>).

Yesterday was incredible [wrote Captain Chris Plekenpol from Iraq on January 31, 2005]. More than 8 million Iraqis—more than half the country's people—entered the Election Day polls.

My interpreter, Mohammed, who'd talked to his father on the phone, spoke with contagious excitement. "Suhr, Suhr! My father! He tell me about the elections. He say many peoples in line. My entire family vote. My grandmother, who is 88 years old. She vote! This amazing time in Iraq." He stopped for a moment. His eyes had a glint. "We have freedom!"

I looked away, not wanting anyone to see the tears building in my own eyes. All we had sacrificed here was for this day. The two soldiers my company lost. The eleven soldiers my battalion lost. The more than 2,000 Coalition forces killed rescuing a people from an evil regime, giving Iraqis freedom.

God considered his sacrifice worth it too. He gave us freedom. Colossians 1:13 says, "For he has rescued us from the one who rules in the kingdom of darkness, and he has brought us into the Kingdom of his dear Son."

Americans and other Coalition forces sacrificed their young men and women for the liberation of Iraq. God sacrificed his Son for the liberation of your soul.

Faith in the Fog of War

My Bonus Day Response: Have I experienced the freedom Christ bought for me with his death and resurrection? Do I regularly celebrate it?

0Prayer for the Week

I want to devote my life to Your purposes, Lord. Help me work that out in my responses to the situations I face every day.
