My Non-negotiable
Theme of the Week: What Is Your Treasure?
Friday, October 3, 2008

Key Bible Verse: Those who are wise will find a time and a way to do what is right (Ecclesiastes 8:5). Bonus Reading: Daniel 1:1-16

The commitment I made—to leave my job at 4:00 and work a 45-hour week—seemed extreme at the time. I knew of no pastor—or professional of any kind, for that matter—who worked only 45 hours a week. I felt guilty. I felt like I wasn't being a good example to the rest of the staff. But essentially I had made a deal with God: "Lord," I'd said, "feel free to build whatever kind of church you can build with 45 hours of my time. You know that's all I have right now."

As a result of my decision, there were meetings that got cut short, programs I didn't attend, and counseling needs I had to delegate. I was usually the first to leave the office. I knew my inflexibility frustrated some people. But it was what I felt I had to do to be what my family needed me to be.

That was more than seven years ago. Our children have grown out of diapers now, Sandra doesn't need me to be home as early anymore. But I've never regretted that decision. I'm still one of the first to leave in the afternoon. I feel so strongly about this principle that I encourage our staff to follow suit. "Cheat at work," I tell them. "Cheat me. But don't you dare cheat at home!"

—Andy Stanley in Choosing to Cheat

My Response: What specific non-negotiable do I need to declare?

Thought to Apply: The demands of modern living are so exacting that men and women everywhere must exercise deliberate selection to live wisely.—Robert Grant (pastor & professor)

Show me, Lord, how to elbow this world's treasures aside with the treasures of Your kingdom.
