Key Bible Verse: Work hard and cheerfully at whatever you do … the Master you are serving is Christ (Colossians 3:23, 24). Bonus Reading: Proverbs 6:6; 13:4
In 1946, a year after the end of World War II, Truett Cathy sold his car, pooled savings with his younger brother, Ben, and borrowed money to buy for $10,600 the Dwarf Grill, a suburban Atlanta 24-hour restaurant with just ten counter stools and four tables.
The Cathy family wanted to share the disciplined joy of gut-wrenching work, and brought up their children to work hard. As toddlers, Truett's wife, Jeanette, would dress them up as fairy-tale dwarfs. They memorized jingles and bounced around, singing to the customers. When they could reach the counters, they rang the register or washed the dishes. God, Truett told his children, rejoices in our successes, not our failures.
If that's true, God has rejoiced a good deal over the Cathys. By the late sixties, Truett had developed the staple of his business—the boneless chicken sandwich. At the time, there was nothing like it on the market. In 1967 he scored another coup—opening the nation's first in-mall fast-food restaurant. In 1990 Business Atlanta magazine named Truett Atlanta's Most Respected CEO. Today, Chick-Fil-A has more than 1,340 restaurants. [continued 9/12]
