Key Bible Verse: I once thought all these things were so very important, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. (Philippians 3:7). Bonus Reading: 1 Timothy 4:7b-9
For many men, it's not their work that's the point of contention in their home. It's a hobby. For some, it's the time they spent at the gym. For others, their mistress is the golf course. For one very close friend, it was his bicycle.
In his early twenties, Mike was an Olympic hopeful. He came very close to making the 1988 Olympic team. When I met Mike, he was 37 and continued to compete and to win. Riding through the mountains of North Georgia was more than an afternoon event. For Mike, it was a passion. It was not uncommon for Mike to ride 100 miles in a weekend.
But riding wasn't a family event. It was time reserved for Mike and his buddies. And it was time that could have, and as Mike later admitted, should have, been given to his wife, Angela, and their eight-year-old daughter.
Angela believed Mike loved her more than his bicycle, but she felt the time it was hogging. Mike attempted to play both sides of the aisle. He offered to take Angela with him on biking weekends. He entered fewer races. But even when Mike was home on Saturdays, as long as his bike hung in the garage, she knew he'd rather be out riding. [continued 9/30]
