Save Yourself
Theme of the Week: Why Singles Save Sex
Friday, September 5, 2008

Key Bible Verse: Use your whole body as a tool to do what is right for the glory of God (Romans 6:13). Bonus Reading: Romans 6:12-14, 19

A once-common expression, rarely heard today, contains one of the most considerate declarations of commitment possible: I'm saving myself for the one I love. Those words bring to mind NBA basketball great A.C. Green, who stunned the stud-minded world of sports when, without self-righteousness, he made known his commitment to abstinence from premarital sex. A.C., a highly committed disciple of Jesus Christ, was anticipating marriage. Though he was the holder of an NBA championship ring, his will to compete against the spirit of the world made him an even greater winner—even in the eyes of many sports commentators.

In today's culture of excess and X-rated ideas, we'd be hard-pressed to find many celebrities like A.C. Still there are those who maintain that a commitment to remain a virgin until marriage isn't a sign of religious prudery, social freakishness, or a personality devoid of appeal or desirability. This perspective keeps the focus of a courtship on building a relationship between two people. The foundational "stuff" for fulfillment (including sexual fulfillment) in marriage is mutual understanding, communication, and a relationship built on valuing a person.

—Jack Hayford in Sex and the Single Soul

My Response: When it comes to dating, courtship, or marriage, how can I make sure I'm focusing on the foundational stuff?

Thought to Apply: Love can wait to give; it is lust that can't wait to get.  —Josh McDowell (youth evangelist)
