Overnight Success? Theme of the Week: Work Habits in Balance Sunday, September 7, 2008

Who Said It … Richard Mouw
Richard Mouw is the president and professor of Christian philosophy at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Along with his duties at Fuller, Dr. Mouw maintains a blog, "Mouw's Musings", serves as a panelist in the online forum "On Faith" offered by Newsweek and the Washington Post, and is a regular columnist on beliefnet.com. His thoughts on work were showcased last week in our Labor Day Bonus Page. What He Said … Overnight Success?
There was a time not long ago when a passenger boarding a late night coast-to-coast flight could expect to stretch out over three seats in the coach section. Not so these days. Many nighttime flights are solidly booked. Is this a phenomenon of today's high-tech culture or plain old-fashioned drivenness? A newspaper story quotes one internet manager as saying that he takes all-night transcontinental flights because it lets him work full days without having to "blow a whole day traveling."
I know the feeling. In a few weeks I will leave a day of meetings in Southern California to fly all night to Charlotte, North Carolina, for a conference that begins first thing in the morning. I took on both of these assignments knowing full well that only a redeye flight would let me do them. The trustees who monitor my presidential patterns [at Fuller Seminary] tell me not to do this kind of thing. But, unfortunately, I sometimes ignore their (and my wife's) advice because of what I see as important parts of "my work."
