Who Said It … Bill Pollard
Bill Pollard began his career in corporate and tax law and moved on to become a Christian college vice president. Eventually he was named CEO of The ServiceMaster Company, a firm that provides management services for hospitals and schools and serves the residential market under brand names such as Merry Maids, TruGreen, and Terminix. Bill now chairs the company's board, and also leads the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association's executive committee.
What He Said … Means to an End
Leadership," Peter Drucker reminded us, "often has little to do with so-called leadership qualities and even less to do with charisma. Leadership is only a means—to what end is the crucial question." I agree. And I would add that the end result of leadership has little to do with the title, status, position, or accomplishments of the leader and much to do with the accomplishments of the followers, the direction they're being led, and who they're becoming in the process.
This principle is reflected in the words of Jesus to his disciples after he'd washed their feet: "Do you understand what I was doing? … Since I, the Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other's feet. … Do as I have done to you" (John 13:12-15).
Leadership is about serving; about never asking someone to do what you aren't willing to do yourself; about being an example so that those who follow are enabled to do likewise; about assuming responsibility for results that will benefit those being led.
