Many have forgotten that the original owner of the Miami Dolphins was Danny Thomas, the wonderful entertainer and humanitarian. Many of us who joined in the effort to build the franchise were attracted to the enterprise by the opportunity to work for him. The Atlanta Falcons came into existence the same year, but for me the Dolphins were more appealing because of Danny Thomas.

Danny lived in Hollywood and only came to Miami periodically. When he did, it was an exciting time for those of us who constituted the Dolphins' first office staff. We were eager to report to him all that we were doing to build the team and franchise. He was sometimes too busy, however, to see all of us during his brief visit, and I still remember how disappointed I was when he was unable to meet with me. He was my leader, and I wanted to report to him.

A wise leader doesn't rely solely on notes and memos to communicate with those he leads. He sees and is seen by those doing the work, allowing team members regular personal time and easy access to him whenever necessary.

Take Jesus' lead. Gather your people around you and let them tell you "all they [have] done and taught."
