Loading-Dock Detour Theme of the Week: Are Your Hopes on Hold? Monday, December 29, 2008
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: The Lord was with Joseph and blessed him greatly as he served in the home of his Egyptian master (Genesis 39:2). Bonus Reading: Gen. 37:18-28; 39:1-6a
While I was in seminary, a recession eliminated my nighttime truck-dock job. Unable to find another job, I dropped out of school and returned home. There not even McDonald's was hiring! The only work I could find was for one night a week.
Finally, after six months, my foreman announced that a job would open up in three weeks. "I'll take it!" I eagerly replied. That Sunday night at my church's open mike time, I shared my news. After the service, a man introduced himself as a pastor from out of state, and asked me to go with him for coffee. After learning about my background, he said, "My church is going through a big transition, and I'm looking for someone to help me pastor it. I think you're it. Come and help me."
"But I need to save money to finish seminary," I objected. He asked how much I'd make unloading trucks. I told him. They'd match that amount, he said. "But," I protested, "you don't want someone for six months!" He thought that could get them over the transition hump. So I wound up with hands-on experience I'd never have gotten on the truck docks. And when I did finish seminary, I was called to a small church in transition!
