Key Bible Verse: Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life. She will not hinder him but help him all her life (Proverbs 31:11). Bonus Reading: Proverbs 31:10, 28-31

One intriguing trait of the male species is that he never admits he's lost. The one-hour trip has already taken three, but Dad insists he knows where he's going. Mom suggests that he stop and ask for directions; Dad suggests that she keep reading a magazine.

Karen and I have developed a fuel-saving alternative. I'm the pilot; I have the wheel. She's the navigator; she has the map. We're both good at what we do. We get places so much faster when we work together.

Families live more peacefully when a husband realizes that God gave him a wife to be his navigator. In their goal-oriented drive for conquest, men can get lost. Women are often the value clarifiers of the home. They remind men that people are more important than things, that the children need more love or more control, or that the family is drifting spiritually.

The Bible describes an emotionally rich man as one whose wife "carefully watches all that goes on in her household … who fears the Lord" (Proverbs 31:27, 30). A man is made to need his partner. No wonder he gets lost when she gets crowded out of his life.

—Ron Hutchcraft in Living Peacefully in a Stressful World

My Response: One area in which my wife's instincts are sounder than mine is …

Thought to Apply: In a successful marriage, there is no such thing as one's way. There is only the way of both, only the bumpy, dusty, difficult, but always mutual path. —Phyllis McGinley (poet)
