An Upbeat or Downbeat Faith?
Theme of the Week: Attitude Adjustment
Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Key Bible Verse: We have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will (Colossians 1:9 NIV). Bonus Reading: Colossians 1:9-12

It is possible to do our jobs either with a smile or with a frown. Life can either be a chore, or it can be a joy.

I spoke with a young man who is just starting out in the business world. He's landed an entry-level job with a large company. But now he's frustrated, gritting his teeth to make it through one more lousy day. He views his job as boring, and the people he works with as irritating.

This young man has great talent and will probably do well in his career. But right now he needs a major attitude adjustment. He didn't believe it when I told him that more people are fired for a bad attitude than for poor performance. But it's true.

It's not just what we do in life that counts; it's also how we do it. People watch Christians carefully because we claim to have a personal relationship with God. Unbelievers may not understand theology, but they do expect that our faith will make a difference in the way we do our work.

That's what makes Paul's prayer (in today's Key Bible Verse) so powerful. Because once our lives are filled with the knowledge of God's will, we will bear the fruit of a changed life (a positive attitude being just one evidence of fruit) in the "good work" that we do.

My Response: Do my workplace attitudes enhance or detract from my witness?

Thought to Apply: Growl all day and you'll feel dog tired all night. —source unknown
