Victor Mentality Theme of the Week: Are Your Hopes on Hold? Thursday, January 1, 2009
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: My times are in your hand (Psalm 31:15). Bonus Reading: Lamentations 3:17-18, 25-26
He was 25, and it should have been the best year of his life. He married his sweetheart, Annie, carefully planning every detail of their honeymoon in Europe. During an intense thunderstorm, however, his beautiful bride was struck by lightning and paralyzed. For the next 39 years, her husband faithfully took care of her. They were never able to have children. They were never able to travel again. But they collected and together enjoyed scenic postcards from sites all over the world they could never view in person.
The husband was the great theologian, Benjamin Warfield. For close to 40 years, he taught his classes, wrote his articles, and took care of his wife, arranging his schedule so that he was rarely absent from her side for more than two hours at a time.
But to those who knew this couple best, they weren't victims; they were victors. As newlyweds, the couple certainly never expected to encounter such tragedy. Yet in the writings of this great Bible teacher, there is no seething rage at God, no sense that God needed to submit his plan to them for their approval. Even in the midst of devastating loss, they were satisfied to simply trust and obey.
—Steve Farrar in God Built
My Response: Knowing God's character, a puzzle I can entrust to him without knowing the solution is …
Thought to Apply: Whatever occurs has been foreseen by [God] from all eternity. … It could not occur unless it had a part to play in God's comprehensive plan. And knowing that, we are satisfied. —Benjamin Warfield
