Key Bible Verse: "I do not whisper obscurities in some dark corner so no one can understand what I mean" (Isaiah 45:19). Bonus Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:27, 29-30
A man had come a thousand miles to a layman's conference I was also attending. In a counseling interview he told me that he was at his wit's end. For six years—ever since he'd become a Christian—he'd been in turmoil about whether or not he should go to seminary and become a pastor. He was part of a family-owned business in which he was doing very well. And as we talked it was clear that he enjoyed his work.
I stepped out on a limb and told him, "I think I can solve your problem."
"How?" he asked, amazed and hopeful.
I asked about his grades in college. Then we make a quick call to the seminary he wanted to attend. That call revealed that with his grades there was no way he'd be accepted as a divinity student there. He said that was the only place he'd want to go to.
"Then your problem is solved," I told him. "Go home and continue being God's man in business."
He did, and several years later wrote and told me how happy he was as a businessman trying to witness for his Lord. But he could have saved himself six years of misery by some commonsense checking of his alternatives.
