As a young man in India, evangelist/apologist Ravi Zacharias dreamt of becoming a pilot. He traveled with a friend to an Air Force base where young men vied for a handful of slots. "After a battery of mental, physical, and endurance tests," Ravi writes, "I was overjoyed to learn that, out of several hundred competing, I'd placed third and my buddy fourth. 'I'm going to make it!' I called home. 'All that's left is an interview with the senior officer tomorrow.'
"Next morning the heavyset officer grilled me about my values and dreams, then gruffly announced, 'Son, I'm rejecting you. This job is about killing; psychologically you're unfit to kill.'
"Family and friends waited with garlands as I stepped off the train, humiliated. I kept wondering, Is this God blocking my steps? Someone suggested talking to Russell Self,
a visiting missionary from Canada. I knocked at his YWCA door and poured out my disappointment. 'Sometimes we're so sure of ourselves,' he wisely counseled, 'we don't realize doors should not be forced. God opens but also shuts them. Those shut doors are clues about where God wants us to go.' Then he recited [today's Key Bible Verse]. 'Ravi. I believe you'll learn from this that God has everything under control.'"
