Going to Bat for Ellie Theme of the Week: Go Ahead, Push Your Values Friday, January 23, 2009
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: Stand true to what you believe. Be courageous. Be strong (1 Corinthians 16:13). Bonus Reading: 1 John 3:16-18
Bob described his crusade. "I wanted to do two things. One was to raise money to help Ellie cover her medical bills; the other was to put some heat on the administration. So first I sponsored a dinner in Ellie's honor. I put flyers around campus. I e-mailed friends. And guess what?" he said with a wide smile. "The turnout was great!"
But then I had to speak. Well, I was shaking in my boots. But after I got going, I said things the students didn't want to hear—that they couldn't just put five dollars in the paper buckets that were passed around and feel they'd done their duty. I also said things that the administration didn't want to hear—that in our community of affluence it was wrong for a person who'd given her soul to the university to have to struggle because of her inability to work due to poor health.
"I was probably a bit over the top, but it was worth it, because everyone was exceptionally generous. We raised over ten thousand dollars for her. Can you believe it?
"But you know what was really cool?" Bob went on. "A graduate student picked up on the issue of workmen's compensation and is working with the administration to revamp the benefits system for cafeteria workers."

My Response: Would I have approached the situation like Bob did? Why or why not?
