Organizers from many denominations plan-ned a citywide dem-onstration against pornography and obscenity. One Sunday morning, all across the capital city, church people signed a petition. They were also urged to come to a public demonstration against these vices in society. On the day of the dem- onstration, 1,000 people from all walks of life attended a rally in the city square. Church leaders attended and gave full support. Downtown traffic came to a standstill as rally participants marched peacefully to the Parliament building, where dignitaries waited. Six representatives from the demonstrators submitted their petition to the Speaker of Parliament, government ministers, and ten members of Parliament. The room was packed with journalists. The archbishop handed over 12,000 citizens' signatures. Various officials spoke, prom-ising to look at the grievances.

For the first time the churches of the country had united to speak as one body about an issue that touched the nation. There was a strong sense that history was made that day. Church people marveled that the time had come when the church in their nation could no longer be ignored when it took a stand.
