Connecting with Jordan Theme of the Week: So Who's Your Timothy? Monday, June 1, 2009
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 1:13). Bonus Reading: 2 Timothy 2:1-2
In 2003, Val and I took a cruise to Cozumel, Mexico. On the deck one night, I noticed a lone teenager watching the grown-ups dance. So I turned and asked him, "Why aren't you downstairs with the high school kids playing video games?"
"It's not my style," he said. His name, I learned, was Jordan Shimon; he was on spring break with his dad and little brother. There was something about this tall teen I liked. "If I'm supposed to relate to this kid," I prayed, "let me see him tomorrow; I'll pull him aside and talk to him."
The next day, while Val had a massage, I walked to the cafeteria. Jordan, his brother, and a couple of friends stood just in front of me in line. I invited them to eat with me. They learned who I was and about a couple of big games I'd played in. As we interacted, I sensed Jordan wanted someone to tell him it was okay to be a man of God in today's world. He became my newest Timothy. I still call him at least once a month and give him Scriptures to read.
Right now I have about 30 Timothys. I call them my little brothers, my mentees … and the future.
