Thirst Awareness
Theme of the Week: Pause that Refreshes
Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Key Bible Verse: "Anyone who is thirsty may come to me … and drink! For the Scriptures declare, 'Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'" (When he said "living water" he was speaking of the Spirit) (John 7:37-39). Bonus Reading: John 4:1-13

What if I told you that "living by faith" is like something you already do throughout your day instinctively and automatically. You can drink water in the middle of an important staff meeting, during a long commute, or pulling an all-nighter. It isn't added to your schedule but becomes a natural, continuous part of your daily routine.

Could living by faith really be that simple and accessible? Look carefully at Jesus words in [today's Key Bible Verses] as he describes the essence of the spiritual life. It's as simple as drinking water. "Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!"

Jesus isn't describing coming to him for the first time. He's describing a constant experience every Christ-follower can have. As we recognize any thirst in our life, any brokenness in our soul, we can come to him in that moment and drink deeply of his inexhaustible resources.

Jesus isn't asking us to believe some principles; he's inviting us to experience him as a Person. "Come and drink." At any moment—in the midst of our busyness, stress, the stuff of life—we can drink deeply, experiencing his presence.

My Response: When have I felt a thirst for God? How did I deal with it?

Thought to Apply: Many of us aren't thirsty for God because we've quenched our thirst at other fountains. Erwin Lutzer
