Imagine this scenario: Every morning, you go to the same coffee shop for a latte and time to read the newspaper. One day, noticing another customer surfing the internet with his laptop, you realize that your favorite coffee shop has wireless internet capability.
All this time you've had the capacity to connect to billions of pieces of information. Next morning you bring a laptop, and instantly have access to every newspaper in the world.
What changed? Not the coffee shop. Just your awareness of the reality around you, awakening in you a desire to connect with what was there all along. The same is true in our spiritual lives. The Holy Spirit continually invites us to experience the life-changing reality of Jesus' presence with us.
I remember engaging in an increasingly volatile conversation with a colleague. As the intensity and defensiveness on both sides ratcheted up, I sent up a prayer of desperation—"Help God!"—and immediately sensed the presence of Jesus there with us. My attitude softened, and the conversation turned positive. It's amazing what can happen in moments when we become aware of Jesus' presence with us.
