Theme of the Week: Payoff of Eternal Proportions

Who Said It … John Register

John Register was an All-American in the NCAA long jump and 4x400-meter relay teams. While in the army, he won nine Armed Service Competition gold medals. But during hurdle training for the Olympics in 1994, John severed an artery.

After the amputation of a leg, John started swimming as rehabilitation. Just 18 months later, he made the Paralympics team as a swimmer. At the 2000 Games, he broke the American long jump record. John now manages the U.S. Olympic Committee's Paralympic Academy International and it's Military Program.

What He Said … Upset Fruit Basket

As the truth of John 15:8 sank in—"When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father"— I questioned if my life was making an eternal difference. For three years I kept asking God, "Where's my fruit for you?"

Then I received orders to go to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Being in non-deployment status, under orders to transfer to San Francisco, and having already started leadership training, I was floored. Not looking forward to 125 degrees in the shade, I earnestly asked God, "Why?" "This," God gently whispered, "is where you're going to see your fruit."

On the bus ride to the plane, I sat next to a Hispanic kid. We began talking and I ended up sharing about my faith in Jesus. But after our 20-minute conversation, I didn't see him again. [continued 6/15]
