It was my birthday. So I treated myself to one of my favorite activities: scheduling lunch with a spiritual skeptic.
He was a successful, street-wise building contractor whose daughter had started coming to our church. Although he was on the defensive as we began lunch and started our conversation, soon he began asking insightful questions about Christianity.
As I laid out for him the biblical teaching on salvation, I sensed a glimmer of understanding. What was supposed to be an hour-long lunch stretched until four o'clock.
At the end, he said, "You know, I'm 53 years old, and nobody ever told me about grace before." All I'd done was to explain the gospel in terms he could understand. By the time we shook hands, he was committed to sincerely seeking the truth about God, and I was reeling from the kind of fulfillment that's beyond my ability to describe.
What else could I have done that afternoon that would have been more important? No adventure is greater, no enterprise more exciting, and no effort more worthwhile than communicating Christ to irreligious individuals.
