Distress Signal Theme of the Week: So Who's Your Timothy? Tuesday, June 2, 2009
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: Philip asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?" The man replied, "How can I, unless someone instructs me?" (Acts 8:30-31). Bonus Reading: Philippians 2:20-21
I invited a young man I met at a wrestling tournament to a men's breakfast and Bible study. As I explained how Jesus calls us to be in a discipling relationship with Him and others, I noticed something was troubling him, and asked about it.
"Two years ago," this former college football player said, "I knew my marriage was in trouble and went to a church event in another state. The preacher spoke of the strength that comes from starting a relationship with Jesus. I prayed with a man at the front of the church. He gave me some material and invited me to church the following week. I decided to quit drugs, pornography … everything—but I didn't know how.
"I started to attend church. I even went to the men's breakfast, but I had questions. I knew my friends were headed down destructive paths, so I tried to start new relationships at church. But everyone I tried to meet with either wouldn't return my phone calls or was too busy. You don't need to tell new believers that they need to be discipled," he said on the verge of tears. "We know. What's the point of telling us to follow if you're not going to show us how?"
