How Discipleship Happens
Theme of the Week: So Who's Your Timothy?
Friday, June 5, 2009

Key Bible Verse: See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily … so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness (Hebrews 3:12-13 NIV). Bonus Reading: Hebrews 10:23-25

During my struggle with alcoholism, I discovered [today's Key Bible Verse]. We're called to encourage. That means both to root another on in the race and to admonish him.

We're to be with people who'll tell us the truth we need to hear even if it isn't what we want to hear. When I know a person loves me, I'll allow them to say the hard things. When someone really knows me, I don't have the

excuse that they just misunderstood what I said or did. God says to do this daily because He knows we can get messed up in the head in a moment's time.

I had many questions, but found no one in church to answer them. The pastor was too busy and no one else had time. AA became essential in my life because the church wasn't there to help.

Jesus modeled effective discipleship by building relationships. He had a small group of men He could really know and thus keep accountable. He encouraged them and provided a safe place where they could voice their shortcomings and ask for help. He could call them on the carpet when they got it wrong.

—Jim Putman in Church Is a Team Sport

My Response: Someone I could cheer on (or admonish) today is _______.

Thought to Apply: Real discipleship happens in small groups. —Jim Putman

0Prayer for the Week

Thank you, Jesus, for the priority you gave to building faith in the lives of a few men. Help me to follow your example.
