High-Tech Altar? Theme of the Week: Take Back Your Life Sunday, May 24, 2009

Who Said It … Gabe Knapp
Gabe Knapp grew up on a farm near Ord, Nebraska, and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. After becoming senior product manager at Microsoft Corporation, he became a management consultant with Deloitte, a company that also provides auditing, tax, and financial advisory services worldwide. A boyhood friend says that Gabe "has knowledge and influence on a grand scale but still is so genuine and real, and chasing God in all things." What He Said … High-Tech Altar?
Regardless of where I am, thanks to my nifty pocket device, I can send and receive e-mails, surf the web, listen to music, or watch a movie. But innovations in technology may cause my prayer life to suffer. It's all too easy to fill the gaps in my work day by turning to my device to crank out another e-mail response or receive my next instruction. When I go jogging, I grab my portable music player. On a plane, I watch a DVD movie. When I jump in the car, I automatically reach for the stereo.
The Bible describes a jealous God who wants to know our deepest thoughts. Psalm 46:10 says: "Be still, and know that I am God! … I will be honored …" When did I last take time out of a hectic workday to just "be still"? I must be careful that the time I spend with technology doesn't replace my daily time with God. I need to seek direction from God, not from the new e-mail in my inbox. I need to worship Jesus Christ, not the latest technology.
