Key Bible Verse: Soon he and his disciples couldn't even find time to eat (Mark 3:20). Bonus Reading: Mark 3:7-8, 21

My kids complain that if they set a glass of water on the kitchen counter for a millisecond, I'll snatch it up and put it in the dishwasher. With such a neurotic personality, nothing piles up on my desk. When I first became a seminary president, I felt overwhelmed. Before traveling, I'd try to catch up on paperwork; on my return, I'd rush to my office to deal with any new work.

On a day I was to travel to a conference in Texas, I decided to quickly run by the office then have coffee with my wife before heading to the airport. As soon as they spotted me, I was inundated with staff needing to talk with me "just for a minute." My coffee date with my wife was reduced to a quick hug as I grabbed my suitcase and dashed out the door. As I drove to the airport, I realized that I hadn't even said good-bye to my kids!

Later, sitting in the conference auditorium, the Holy Spirit spoke to me. I jotted down a full page of ideas about how to be a better husband and father even while holding a demanding job. Eager to get home to implement these plans, I stuffed the list into my Bible. [continued 5/27]

—Richard Blackaby in Unlimiting God

My Response: To distinguish the truly important from the merely demanding, I need to …

Thought to Apply: We live by demands when we should live by priorities. —J.A. Motyer (biblical scholar)
