Slim Down
Theme of the Week: Take Back Your Life
Thursday, May 28, 2009

Key Bible Verse: Times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord (Acts 3:20). Bonus Reading: Luke 10:38-42

No, I'm not pushing a weight-loss plan—at least not in the usual sense. Slim down in other areas of your life: Simplify your schedule, commitments, goals—whatever needs simplifying. Don't let yourself get overextended. Examine the things you're doing and ask whether you really need to be doing them. Realize that your priority in life should be a relationship with Christ, not an agenda for him. The classic example in Scripture is found in [today's Bonus Reading]. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus while Martha was busy being a good hostess. Jesus praised Mary for realizing what was most important at the time: simply being with him.

I made a decision years ago that some would consider heretical. I looked at the time and energy that went into sending Christmas cards and decided not to do them anymore. People who don't get one from me know that I love them; they just know I don't do cards. The point isn't to slam the tradition of Christmas cards. It's that sometimes you need to stop and question the traditions, oughts, and shoulds in your life. The demands of life constantly force us to add new things to our schedule. Why not ask God where you need to subtract a few?

—Chip Ingram in Good to Great in God's Eyes

My Response: What new demand am I facing? What current expectation could I drop to make life less hectic?

Thought to Apply: Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. —John Ortberg (quoting advice from a friend)

0Prayer for the Week

I want to be directed by your Spirit, Lord, not driven by my calendar. Please teach me how.
