Turning Pro Theme of the Week: So Who's Your Timothy? Sunday, May 31, 2009

Who Said It … Shaun Alexander
The former Seattle Seahawks' running back is a winner on two fronts. In eight years with the Seahawks, he maintained his spot as the club's Most Valued Player. But Shaun hasn't allowed his life to revolve around his NFL career. He's a child of God first, and a husband and father second. In Shaun's recently published autobiography, Touchdown Alexander, he tells this larger story of trust in, and obedience to, God. What He Said … Turning Pro
Shifting from playing for the U. of Alabama to being an NFL draft pick brought a whole different level of celebrity. I had just received the award for the Southeastern Conference Male Athlete of the Year. So now more than ever, people wanted me to come and speak. Others figured I probably wouldn't be available anymore.
When I later flew to Bristol, Tennessee, to attend my fourth FCA [Fellowship of Christian Athletes] camp, I'd barely gotten there when one of the kids ran up to me. "You're here! You're really here!"
"Sure I am," I said.
"But you're a pro now!"
"That's right."
"And you're still doing FCA camps?"
Others had the same question. Why would I bother to come there when I'd turned professional? "Because helping kids is a part of who I am," I told them. "This is where I can come to help those kids turn on to God."
Nothing had changed regarding my concern for kids in need. It still hasn't.
