Key Bible Verse: Short-tempered people do foolish things (Proverbs 14:17). Bonus Reading: Proverbs 14:29; James 1:19-20

While trying to get through a seminary degree at a pace unknown to mortal man, I had a habit of laying things down "wherever." That was how my car keys became the focus of one crisis after another. I'd storm around the room, shouting, "Where are my keys? Has anyone seen my keys? Who moved my keys?" How could I live up to my dream image of total competence and then walk in 15 minutes late to a meeting that I myself had called! In the simple act of mislaying something, I was transformed from a responsible, loving husband and father into a fire-breathing monster.

The children would hide, and Joyce would stare at the scene I was making, offering helpful suggestions on finding a proper place to put my keys every time I finished using them. Sensible suggestions were the last thing I wanted just then.

Finally I'd find my keys and drive off. But then I had to live with the thought of what I'd done, "Why," I prayed, "did I behave like a hopeless case?" I was tormented by my unchristian tirades. What a stupid thing to do, I'd blast myself. You call yourself a smart man, and then do a dumb thing like this. What an idiot!

My Response: When I blow my fuse, what innocent people get hurt?

Thought to Apply: Anger leads to ulcers, high blood pressure, and early death. —James Walker

0Prayer for the Week

If I'm ever to gain mastery over my temper, Lord, it will take your strength. I ask for that now.
