Who Is the Artist or Group?
Theme of the Week: Bridge the Musical Gap
Thursday, October 15, 2009

Key Bible Verse: Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live (Titus 1:16). Bonus Reading: Matthew 7:16-20

In today's culture, the bands who write the songs are pop idols. Students follow their inside lives, wishing to be like them.

As a parent, I'm encouraged when a pop star makes statements about the purity of his life and his goal of holding true to morality. In every generation a cadre of bands and musicians restore hope to the music world.

On the flip side of the album are bands with a history of foul language and God-hating songs. Nathan and I crossed certain bands and artists—including Marilyn Manson, Eminem, and Soulja Boy—off our list. Others churn out great songs which meet our other criteria, but are flat-out devil worshippers. Their lifestyle, look, and comments emulate only things of the Devil.

But even more dangerous are bands that are subtle in their lyrics and music.

Crossover artists—like Skillet or The Afters—whose songs can be heard on "Christian" and "secular" music stations alike, are popular with all teenagers. Overall, these bands write either loving-life songs or loving-other-people songs. Their lifestyle is clean; you don't read about them in the daily tabloids.

—Todd Stocker in An 8-Track Parent in an Mp3 World

My Response: What artists that my child listens to should be ruled off-limits because of their lifestyles?

Thought to Apply: I hear five seconds of some songs and judge that they are secular. Then I listen to the words and I'm like, "Cool, they're talking about God."—Nathan Stocker

0Prayer for the Week

Thank you for your gift of music to calm anxieties, lift spirits, and express feelings. May it be used for your glory and not to the Enemy's advantage.
