The Win-Win Results
Theme of the Week: Bridge the Musical Gap
Friday, October 16, 2009

Key Bible Verse: I will sing a new song to you, O God! I will sing your praises with a ten-stringed harp (Psalm 144:9). Bonus Reading: Psalm 33:1-3

Nathan and I have been at this for more than a year now. Weekly, he presents me with song lyrics. We talk about the songs, why the other kids at school like them, and if they are appropriate for him. We believe our agreed guidelines (which we will continue to work through) honor God and allow one the freedom to choose music that is acceptable and healthy within a framework that is both biblical and respectful. Knowing exactly what is and is not an acceptable song provides us with freedom and safety.

The results have gone well beyond the yes-or-no music decision. Some other benefits: As a parent, I am also held accountable by the guidelines. My child is empowered to make choices. There is a reduction of risk. And we are free to listen to the songs on our playlist guilt-free!

As a result of these guidelines, Nathan feels empowered to make his own music decisions. And I feel confident in exercising my parental authority based on these guidelines. Together, we are constantly in conversation which, as a by-product, has strengthened our relationship. And God is honored. What can be better than that?

—Todd Stocker in An 8-Track Parent in an Mp3 World

My Response: How could initiating discussion of music choices move us past parent-child confrontation to mutually respectful communication?

Thought to Apply: No, it's good. Well, maybe not your music taste, but we'll work on that. —Warrick Brown (TV character)

0Prayer for the Week

Thank you for your gift of music to calm anxieties, lift spirits, and express feelings. May it be used for your glory and not to the Enemy's advantage.
