Passion Makes Perfect Theme of the Week: Where's Your Inner Drive? Monday, October 19, 2009

Key Bible Verse: You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy (Psalm 63:5). Bonus Reading: Psalm 63:1-8
Guitar playing was something I did on my own. I wanted to do it, and experienced great joy at improving my skills. Hours of playing the guitar flew by like minutes. You could call it "practice," but it was nothing like that for me. Practice connotes work and hard discipline. I never saw playing the guitar as work. The rewards of being able to play something I had heard Peter, Paul, & Mary or James Taylor do on the guitar was a thrill that kept driving me on.
I had an increasing desire to perform—to sing and play and ultimately write my own songs. There's a level of communication I didn't have with the trumpet, which is useless without some kind of accompaniment. In a relatively short time with the guitar, I was able to capture the heartbeat of my generation and utilize the music for what I was increasingly wanting to say. It was a platform, a stage, and to a degree, stardom. I was hooked.
There was a time in my life when the spiritual disciplines—praying, reading the Bible, and paying attention to God and spiritual things—were like learning the trumpet. At other times it was more like learning the guitar. What made the difference? [continued 10/20]
