Squiggly Lines
Theme of the Week: Read the Directions First
Monday, September 14, 2009

Key Bible Verse: The paths of the Lord are true and right, and righteous people live by walking in them. But in those paths sinners stumble and fall (Hosea 14:9). Bonus Reading: 2 Timothy 3:15-17

I love maps and I love mountains. These two passions interlock when I go hiking. From a map I gain the truth about the region I'm about to explore. That truth guides my steps so that I might fully enjoy a hike in the mountains and return home safely.

All serious hikers use U.S. Geological Survey topographical maps—the greenish maps with all of those squiggly elevation lines. The government topographical maps are almost always reliable, though some are a bit dated. It's not uncommon, for example, to find that a hiking trail has changed course since the map was published. Thus I always take the topos with a grain of salt. A map is reliable only insofar as it is completely up-to-date with the region it depicts.

Although the Bible was written centuries ago, it's still a completely up-to-date map for walking in God's truth. It will show you the best way to walk every time, without fail. Admittedly, sometimes it's hard to figure out exactly how to read the biblical map. But God's written Word is always the map for living and well worth the effort it takes to live according to its truth. In this endeavor we are not alone. God has provided expert assistance through the Holy Spirit.
