Duh! Theme of the Week: Read the Directions First Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Key Bible Verse: Commit yourself to instruction; listen carefully to words of knowledge (Proverbs 23:12). Bonus Reading: Acts 17:10-12
Along with the computer sitting in your home came a manual. If you're anything like me, it ends up somewhere on the top shelf of your office unread. I can figure out how the first 5-to-10 percent of the program works. But one day I decide to attempt a new command, and find myself staring at a screen covered with error messages. So I call technical support. When I finally get a voice on the other end, our conversation goes like this: "Hello, Mr. D'Acchioli, How may I help you?"
"Well, I'm using this program and it just isn't doing what I'm asking."
"Well, what's it doing, sir?"
"I'm asking it to perform a, b, c, "I reported," and it's responding with x, y, and z."
"Sir, do you have your manual handy?"
"Yes, hang on a second, and I'll pull it down."
"Okay, turn to page 974. See the illustration at the top of the page? Is that what your computer is doing?"
"Yes, that's exactly it."
"See the instructions just below that diagram?"
"Yes."
"If you follow them, you won't have this problem again."
Feeling rather silly, I thank the technician and hang up. [continued 9/16]
