A conglomerate had offered to buy the business my friend and his partner formed to create ministry tools for youth workers. It was their chance to cash out on 20 years of vision and sacrificial effort.
With the sale price negotiated, the principles met in the buyer's offices to seal the deal. But first one executive asked about a line item in the records. "I saw several thousand dollars budgeted for Popsicles. Can you explain this?"
"Every year during a plenary session of our national conference for youth workers," my friend explained." I walk onto the
platform eating a Popsicle. The emcee says, 'If you want a treat, you have to bring one for everyone.' 'I can do that!,' I shout
as helpers burst into the arena with boxes full of Popsicles, throwing them into the crowd."
"Well, we won't be needing Popsicles in the future," the VP of purchasing announced.
My friend looked around the table at the other executives nodding assent. "I'm sorry," he said, standing, "but we founded this company to help ministers and celebrate their calling to work with young people. No Popsicles means no deal." Thanking them for their interest, he gathered his papers, and walked out.
