Can you think of anything more disgusting than coming across a large, filthy, disease-carrying Giant African Rat the size of a cat?
But this rodent has recently been transformed by Bart Weejens of Belgium into "a friend of humanity." He's demonstrated how they can locate and destroy the landmines that still litter the fields of several formerly war-torn nations. What makes these rats so effective is that they can be trained, with banana bites for rewards, to sniff out the metal tea infusers filled with explosive chemicals. At about six pounds they aren't heavy enough to set off the landmines; have a 6-to-8-year life expectancy, which makes the initial investment in their training worth the effort; and are tremendously resistant to various diseases. These giant African rats are saving lives and transforming unsafe landscapes into usable farmland.
Weejens figured out how to turn something repulsive into something good. That's what God has done with the various "pests" he's placed in our lives. These may be family members, co-workers, or fellow churchgoers. Our Father wants to use these "rats" to make me more like him. Am I going to turn away in disgust or allow them to do their transforming work in me?
