Theme of the Week: Filling Your Family Role
Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Key Bible Verse: Be earnest and disciplined in your prayers (1 Peter 4:7). Bonus Reading: 1 Chronicles 16:11, Mark 1:35, Luke 6:12, and Matthew 26:36.

What usually goes through your mind as you drive home from work? Most likely you think about the day's events. While it's valuable to bring closure to the day, there's a negative side effect we need to watch for. Sometimes we end up dragging our tiredness, foul mood, and stress home with us.

It was during one of my drives home that I came up with my "halfway point" idea. This is how it works: When I am halfway home, I try to remember to push aside all thoughts of work and begin praying. I pray for myself—that I'll arrive home ready to love and interact with my wife and children. I pray for my wife to have a renewed strength as she prepares dinner and cares for the children. I pray that though I feel drained, I'll be refreshed with a second wind of energy so I can give my wife and children the kind of attention that says, "I love you."

And you know what? It really works. Setting my mind to prayer and reminding myself I'm a husband and father has made a big difference in the way I act toward my family upon arriving at home.

—Nick Harrison & Steve Miller in Survival Guide for New Dads

My Response: The best time for me to set aside a few minutes to pray specifically for my family would be …

Thought to Apply: A man ought to live so that everybody knows he is a Christian … and most of all, his family ought to know.—Dwight L. Moody (American evangelist)
