I stood on the foundation of a building in Chalmette, Louisiana. I was there with two elders from our church and Derek Buchert, a local pastor. The foundation was all that was left of his church's building. It had been destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Derek and his wife, Bonnie, knew God had called them to the area and refused to leave. But they had no place to meet.
While we were standing there talking and praying, Derek pointed to an empty auto repair shop—a perfect temporary location for Derek's church to meet in.
But the owner wanted far more in rent than the church could afford. That's when the spirit of extravagant giving—the kind shown by Mary [in today's Key Bible Verse]—kicked in. One of our church's elders started making calls on his cell. Within the hour, members of his small group had committed to fund the lease on the repair shop—three thousand dollars a month—for an entire year.
That's how giving works. It spreads and multiplies. It gives hope and encouragement. It changes lives.
