Woodpile Wisdom
Theme of the Week: Filling Your Family Role
Thursday, December 3, 2009

Key Bible Verse: Repeat [God's commands] again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up (Deuteronomy 6:7). Bonus Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:7-12

My friend's engaged-to-be-married son was in the Army and had one more day of leave left. He had spent the other days of his leave with his fiancĀŽe. So, how did this adult son want to spend the final day of leave?

"I want to spend it with you, Dad," he told my friend, "cutting and stacking wood together just like we used to."

So, the young man joined his dad for several hours of hard work and sweat.

Afterward, my friend told me he'd been convinced the lessons he'd taught about life and faith had gone in one ear and out the other.

"I had always thought that much of my fathering efforts had been wasted on my son," he said with tear-filled eyes. "My son told me how much he appreciated all he had learned through doing those mundane chores side by side."

My friend had mistakenly thought he'd only been cutting and stacking wood with his son. But those times were about so much more than preparing firewood for winter. They were about passing along invaluable lessons from one generation to the next.

—Jamie Bohnett

My response: What lessons of life and faith am I passing along through my day-to-day interactions with my children?

Thought to Apply: You are my greatest adventure, and I almost missed it.—Mr. Iincredible (dad from The Incredibles, speaking to his family)
