I stood helpless behind the young Hispanic who was trying to pay for the gasoline he'd just pumped into the faded red pickup truck. It was overloaded with other Spanish-speaking men ready to head out to work as day laborers on a construction job or in fields to help produce a harvest on the farms that still cover 60 percent of my county.

The attendant at the counter was screaming at the young man, demanding that he communicate in English. while understandably frustrated about the language barrier, the attendant's out-of-control anger reinforced what I found out later: The white man at the counter hated Hispanic people. He felt that they were an inferior people from an inferior culture. I wished I knew Spanish so I could have translated into English a defense of the young man. He was clearly and understandably upset; all he wanted to do was just pay the right amount of money and escape the scene as quickly as possible.

A loving act toward the growing minority cultures of North America could be to learn the language of the group most dominant in your area. To help us demonstrate Christ's love in a very practical way, God might be calling some of us to study a language.
