It's God's Battle
Theme of the Week: Worship Warriors Wanted
Friday, March 12, 2010

Key Bible Verse: We are human, but we don't wage war as humans do. We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning andto destroy falsearguments. (2 Corinthians 10:3-4) Bonus Reading: 1 Samuel 17:45-47

The story of David's emergence and his first victory in battle over Goliath reveals well his heart. [Today's Bonus Reading contains] fighting words. And they are also words of worship.

There's a little something in what David says that is hugely important: "It is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves" (NIV). Even though David was trained to use the sword and praised God for training him, he knew that battles were not truly won by human strength. The battle is the Lord's—it was true [when David fought Goliath], and it is true today. The battles we are to fight are God's battles, not our own.

As we embrace God's call to become worshiping warriors, we need to remember that we are not called to wage war as the world does: "We are human, but we don't wage war as humans do."

So as a worshiping warrior in our era, I don't use my hands for violence. I use them to protect and build up. I lift my hands in prayer and worship. I [carefully] handle the Word of God and speak it out. I do all of these things as a son and soldier in the kingdom of God.

Through my life and all my actions, as well as my prayers and my songs, I am demolishing strongholds set up against God.

—Brian Doerksen in Make Love, Make War

My Response: I will remember that the battle is God's … and I am on the winning side.

Thought to Apply: The devil is not terribly frightened of our human efforts and credentials. But he knows his kingdom will be damaged when we begin to lift up our hearts to God.—Jim Cymbala (pastor, writer)
