Love and War
Theme of the Week: Worship Warriors Wanted
Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Key Bible Verse: The king appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the Lord and praising him for his holy splendor. This is what they sang: "Give thanks to the Lord; his faithful love endures forever!" (2 Chronicles 20:21) Bonus Reading: 2 Chronicles 20:1-29

God is calling us to love, and he is calling us to battle. There are many ways to express love and to participate in the battle. It's the way we live our lives; it's the way we serve, defend, and protect. One of the ways I make love and war is through music. I had no idea that I would become a songwriter. I just started walking with God, and the songs followed. Some of the songs I've written are honest and intimate expressions of love. Other songs are desperate cries in the middle of the battle.

And that's one of the amazing things about songs in worship. They powerfully focus our expressions of love and war. Sometimes a song is a love song, a way of expressing our devotion to the One who redeemed us. Other songs awaken and strengthen us for the battle—and those songs are sometimes sung and played with such intensity that even our enemies hear them and fear! I resonate with the true story recorded in [today's Key Bible Verse and Bonus Reading]. The worshipers went ahead of the soldiers, and as they worshiped, their enemies' hearts melted with fear. That kind of worship is still happening today. That's the kind of worship I want to spend my life on: worship that is passionate, intimate, and full of the presence of God.

—Brian Doerksen in Make Love, Make War

My Response: How might it be helpful to view worship as a way to prepare for holy battle?

Thought to Apply: Be strong! It matters not how deep-entrenched the wrong, how hard the battle goes, the day how long. Faint not, fight on! Tomorrow comes the song.—Mattie Babcock (Presbyterianclergyman)
