"Repurposed" Theme of the week: Out of Work or Changing Careers Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Key Bible Verses: Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you. (Psalm 42:5-6) Dig Deeper: Psalm 42
[Repurposing is a word] derived from both the computer and business realms. I had heard it from a friend who worked for a local computer retailer and had garnered a national reputation of sorts as an expert communicator on the subject of digital video—which in 1996 I'd originally termed "a mushrooming field that may someday be as familiar to the average consumer as microwaves and fax machines." (YouTube was years away from being a gleam in anyone's eye.) One day he informed me that he had been "repurposed." He explained that, just as software designed for one application can be modified and converted to another application, so had he been repurposed from working with this new digital video technology to selling service contracts to computer customers.
This was not a happy occasion. He spent the weekend in bed, immobilized by depression. Months later, he was still working in the same place, tormented by the desire to leave, but kept in check by the fear of risking the little that he still had to find something better, as well as the remote possibility that things would someday return to normal at his current job. I almost wished that he would be fired, as I had been, so he could get on with life.

My Response: Would it have been better for this friend to have been fired? Why or why not?
Thought to Apply: Sometimes we stare so long at a door that is closing that we see too late the one that is open.—Alexander Graham Bell (scientist, inventor)
