Weekend Bible Study
Theme of the week: Marriage: For Better 'and' Worse
Saturday, February 19, 2011

Proverbs offers plenty of no-nonsense advice and in-your-face warnings on immorality and adultery—like today's Key Study Passage. Any man who wants to remain faithful to his wife and avoid compromising situations, would do well to return to this passage time and again. As you study this passage, ask yourself an honest question: What am I doing to make sure I can keep a safe distance from the "fire" of passion and lust?

Key Study Passage:

Proverbs 6:27-35

  1. According to verses 27 through 29, what are the consequences of adultery and sexual immorality? (For further insights, see also 1 Cor. 6:12-20.)
  2. According to verses 30 through 35, why is adultery much worse than a starving man stealing food because he's hungry? (Focus specifically on v. 34.)
  3. Read Jesus' words in Matthew 5:27-30. Why do you think Jesus is so concerned about lustful thoughts?
  4. How can Matthew 5:29-30 be applied to our everyday lives?
  5. How can you and your closest guy friends help one another avoid sexual "fire"? List several practical ways; share your list with your small group or your closest male friends.

Spend Time in Prayer: Father, forgive me for those times I've gotten too close to the fire; guide me as I seek to take practical steps to protect myself from sexual sin; help me to be a wise friend and positive role model for my friends who struggle sexually.

Proverbs 6:27-35

27 Can a man scoop a flame into his lap
and not have his clothes catch on fire?
28 Can he walk on hot coals
and not blister his feet?
29 So it is with the man who sleeps with another man's wife.
He who embraces her will not go unpunished.

30 Excuses might be found for a thief
who steals because he is starving.
31 But if he is caught, he must pay back seven times what he stole,
even if he has to sell everything in his house.
32 But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool,
for he destroys himself.
33 He will be wounded and disgraced.
His shame will never be erased.
34 For the woman's jealous husband will be furious,
and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
35 He will accept no compensation,
nor be satisfied with a payoff of any size.
