Name and Destroy Theme of the week: Destroying the Idol Called Lust Thursday, March 31, 2011
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: They traded the true God for a fake god, and worshiped the god they made instead of the God who made them. (Romans 1:25, The message) Dig Deeper: Romans 1:21-27
In order to love well, we must rid ourselves of idols. Sensual gods and goddesses readily enslave us; they weaken both our devotion to God and our freedom to love others. When we worship idols, three things may occur. We break the boundaries of commitment; we scramble the complementarity between men and women; and we focus on self, not God or others. You could say that idolatry ultimately results in the worship of the self. Gratefully, God gives us authority to name and destroy our idols so that love can be restored. We make war on idols in order to make holy love.
My teenage son came home one night, bypassed us quickly in his bulky sweatshirt (strange for a hot summer night), then raced upstairs. Having once been a sneaky teen myself, I knew the signs. I bounded after him to find him stashing a bunch of porn DVDs under his bed. Busted. And wide open for redemption.
I could hardly be angry. I remembered in a flash my mom finding porn in my room, and her saying slowly as she leafed through the magazine: "Each one of these people is a son or daughter, has a mother and father … are real people." [continued on 4/1]

My Response: What idol might I need to name and destroy? What idol might I need to help a friend/family member name and destroy?
Thought to Apply: Lust classifies a woman as a sex object who should fulfill a man's selfish desires, instead of a precious person to be loved sacrificially.—Rob Eagar (writer, speaker)

Dear God, make me aware of idols of lust that tempt me and threaten to keep me from worshiping you and you alone; guide me in my efforts to pursue sexual purity.
