Weekend Bible Study
Theme of the week: Heaven Bound
Saturday, April 28, 2012

Paul loved Timothy like a son. Two of his letters were directed specifically to Timothy to encourage and challenge him. This week's study passage takes place at the very end of Paul's ministry and is his final exhortation to Timothy. It's telling that with all the things Paul could have said, he chooses to challenge Timothy to continue preaching the word (v. 2) and encourages him to keep his eyes on the heavenly prize (v. 8). The truth and hope of the gospel was always Paul's chief encouragement.

Key Study Passage:

2 Timothy 4:1-8

  1. According to this week's study passage, what should be our main priorities in life?
  2. Paul warns Timothy about obstacles to the gospel (vv. 3-4). What can we learn from his warnings?
  3. How do verses 7 and 8 apply to your own life? Spend time reflecting on these verses and why Paul could be so confident. (See also Rom. 3:23-24; Rom. 5; Eph. 2:1-10; John 3:16-17.)
  4. Think of someone who is or could be your "Timothy." What encouragement from this week's readings can you pass along to him?

Spend Time in Prayer: Ask God to help you discern how he would like to use you in your current season of life; pray that he would open your eyes to the opportunities he has placed in your path.

2 Timothy 4:1-8

4 I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he appears to set up his Kingdom: 2 Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching.

3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will reject the truth and chase after myths.

5 But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don't be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.

6 As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. 8 And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.

Lord, only you know how much time I have left on this earth; let me use it to your glory in the power that you provide.
