What he Said … Longing for Power and Status
In Mark 10:35-45, we read an account of the time James and John approached Jesus and asked for the privilege of sitting at his right and left hand in the coming kingdom. When the other disciples heard about this, "they became indignant" (Mark 10:41, NIV). I suspect they wondered, Why didn't I think of that?
You might think growing closer to Jesus would make it easier not to contend for status and position, but that wasn't the case for the disciples. Right up to the night before Jesus died, they were jockeying for position and seeking to elevate themselves in the coming kingdom.
On the night of the Last Supper, after years of walking daily with Jesus and soaking in his wisdom and marveling at the miracles he per-formed, the disciples remained concerned about power and status. As they climbed the stairs to the Upper Room, I'm sure they were thinking, Someone is going to get the seat of honor, and someone is going to end up at the other end of the table.

Dear Father, help me to slow down and think deeply and often about the truth that "the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45).
