The Place of Honor Theme of the week: Holy Week: Our Servant-Savior Monday, April 2, 2012
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them. (Luke 22:24) Dig Deeper: Luke 22:7-24
When the disciples arrived at the Jerusalem home, they smelled the aroma of roasted lamb and freshly baked bread and saw the room pre-pared for their arrival—a U-shaped table on the wooden floor, rugs and pillows on which to recline, and a wash basin, a pitcher of water, and a folded towel. The water and towel were to be used by the lowest servant in the house to wash the feet of each guest. But that night, no servant appeared and no disciple volunteered for the job.
Instead, each man quickly looked to the place of honor. Everyone wanted to sit opposite that seat—the number two position. They likely migrated to that corner, each coveting it like kids eying a single ice cream cone. It's not hard to imagine Peter staking out the spot, only to be pulled back, like a man who has stepped in front of a bus, by James and John.
An argument erupted about who among them was greatest. The disciples believed Jesus would soon usher in his kingdom and they were destined for greatness in his administration.
The question remained: Who would be his chief of staff?

My Response: When have I argued (or wanted to argue) my own case for a promotion or at least for proper recognition for a job I knew I had done well?

Dear Father, help me to slow down and think deeply and often about the truth that "the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45).
