Just Plain Dumb Theme of the week: Sin: Yes, We Have a Problem Monday, October 15, 2012

Key Bible Verses: An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him. He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness. (Proverbs 5:22-23) Dig Deeper:
Proverbs 1:7, 20-33
Sin has this way of making us do dumb things.
During a college spring break, I stayed in the dorm at Biola. Bored one afternoon, I heard the shower down the hall turn on. In a moment of brilliance, I remembered the cherry bombs we had bought in Tijuana. I crept into the bathroom, lit the firecracker, and lobbed it over the shower curtain.
The guy started screaming like a little girl; I ran back to my room. Our resident director knocked at my door and asked if I was the one who threw a stick of dynamite into the shower. You see, there were only two guys on our floor: me and the guy whose ears were bleeding. Really dumb.
The RD looked at me and said, "Why did you do it?"
There was no why. There was no deep, meaningful reason behind my actions.
No one decides one day, "I'm going to do something really messed up and ruin my life." No one gets married with plans to keep a mistress. No one loses his temper knowing it will cost his job. No one has kids with plans to ignore them because he is a workaholic.
Sin is dumb. And the sheer foolishness of sin will ruin your life.

Father, I know I'm a sinner saved and sustained by grace; when I'm tempted, remind me of sin's destructive power; give me an obedient heart that seeks what is right, good, and holy.
